1. A small fish tank (5 GAL) 
  2. A one pound box of salt 
  3. 5 gal of water 
  4. A lamp with a 100w bulb
  5. A small piece of hose( to fit the funnel )about 1ft
  6. A very small funnel 
  7.  Food coloring (2 colors)
  8. Thermometer that goes to 120f
  9. Your mom or dad ,big sister or brother

 

 

 

 

  1. First take two gallon of warm water and mix with approximately one cup of salt mix tell all of salt is gone then add a third of a cup more mix and let cool 
  2. Take the funnel and hose, put hose about half way in to the red salt water and slowly add about a gallon  of fresh  water. Move hose slowly toward top of tank,( being careful not to get end of hose above water ) This will build  your gradient .
  3. Now take plastic coffee can lid ( or some other  floating disk like a thin block of wood)  and place on surface of water Pour your last gallon of water very very slowly onto your floating device.
  4. Let set for about 1 hr then add blue food coloring pouring onto floating device (you only need a few drops)
  5. Take 100w light and lamp and put to the top of the tank and turn it on for 24hr 
  6. Put thermometer in water and watch it rise the more the light is on the hotter the bottom will get you should have three different colors and three different salinity  This is how the sun heats the solar pond
